=== Schedule & Rooms ===
We will start at 9AM and finish at 5PM each day. There will also be an evening social event on April 18th. More details regarding the schedule and the social event will follow.
== Logistics ==

=== Getting to Cambridge, UK ===

Cambridge, UK is located approximately 45 minutes North of London by train, with easy access by bus or train to [St. Pancras International - Eurostar (45m rail), London Stansted Airport (40m rail), London Heathrow Airport (LHR - 2h rail), London Gatwick Airport (LGW - 2h rail), Manchester Airport (MIA - 4h rail), London Luton Airport (1h25m bus). European attendees may consider '''Eurostar''' or '''Stansted Airport''' preferred routes due to short transit time to Cambridge and lower prices.

Visitors from the US or elsewhere will likely need to travel into one of London's major international airports, such as Heathrow (LHR) or Gatwick (LGW). With the exception of Luton Airport, rail offers a more convenient but more expensive route to Cambridge than bus, but will require using a combination of Heathrow Express/Tube and Rail (cost is approx. GBP 50-60). There are also several car service companies which arrange transfers from London Heathrow to Cambridge. The trip takes about 1.5-2 hours depending on the time of day.
=== Transport Information ===
This [http://wiki.xenproject.org/mediawiki/images/9/9a/Hackathon15-maps.pdf map] shows you the relative positions of the Intel campus, recommended hotels and key sights within Shanghai.

==== Buses from hotels to the Intel Campus ====
We will be organising a bus service from the recommended hotels (see above) to the Intel site in the morning and the evening. Exact pick-up and return times will be published later.

==== Other ways to get to the Intel Campus ====
Taxi's in Shanghai are relatively cheap. You are looking at a cost of around $20-$25 for a 1-1.5 hour taxi ride of about 30-35 km's. There is no easy way to get to the Intel site by public transport. Should you chose to use a taxi or chose to stay in a different hotel to those recommended, please make sure you organise the taxi with the concierge at your hotel. Printing out a map of the Intel site's location and the address in Chinese as well as your hotel address also helps.

Reference distances to the Intel site:
* [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bund The Bund] : 38 km's - approximately 1.5 hours
* [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pudong Pudong] : 40 km's - approximately 1.5 hours
* Recommended hotels in Hongqiao : 27 km's - approximately 1 hour

==== Getting from the airport to the Hotels and vice versa ====
To get from the airport to one of the recommended hotels, you can take a taxi. It is about a 50 km drive and will take 1-1.5 hours depending on the day of time. It will cost around $25-$30. Make sure to go to the airport's taxi stand and do *not* use one of the offers for a taxi when you come out of the gate. These are normally limousine services which will cost you several times more than a regular taxi. You should also print out the name and a map of the hotel, just in case.
In previous years we have requested for attendees to fill out a form and request an invitation. This was overly complicated, so we will revert back to a simpler approach. Please add your name to the [[#Request|list below]]. If your email address is not known in the Xen Community, please also add the name of your employer and send your e-mail address to community dot manager at xenproject dot org using "Request for Hackathon 2015 Invite" as subject line. This is important, such that we can e-mail more information to you.
|Project=Using Docker to deploy driver domains, service VMs, Mirage OS VMs, and friends - Can it be done?
|Date=2014-04-23
|Contact=Raised by Lars, but does not have the technical depth to really lead it (happy to take notes though)
|Desc=Docker is making a lot of waves in open source communities. There are really two functional aspects to Docker:
* Linux Containers as lightweight hypervisor (with all the security drawbacks)
* Application Containers as a packaging and deployment format - this part is really exciting as it is a ''gamechanger in application design, system deployment, and, critically, versioning''. Slides 1-15 of [http://www.slideshare.net/dotCloud/docker-intro-november] make this case quite compellingly.
What is not clear is how tightly the two are coupled and interdependent. I heard (but can't find references) that there are, or it is possible to write '''Docker Engines''' for other hypervisors. At least in theory.

Now, if you look at [http://www.slideshare.net/dotCloud/docker-intro-november/16 slide 16], you notice that the architecture diagram is very similar to a Xen based system with service domains, driver domains, and the likes of Mirage OS, OSv, ErlangOnXen (also see Voxoz which seem to be working on something similar), ... BUT: of course we have the added benefits of isolation and thus more security and the flexibility of running traditional fully fledged VMs with different Guest OS’es on the same host.

At least in theory, this should make it possible to use the deployment capabilities of Docker to deploy service domains, Mirage OS & friends. If this was possible and could be implemented easily we could be in for a winner. Aka getting all the benefits for the deployment part of Docker, while not suffering any of the drawbacks. And we could piggyback onto the Docker hype. Of course I don’t know whether this is technically feasible at all and how hard it would be to do this.

Maybe relevant References:
* [http://voxoz.com/ Voxoz = ErlangOnXen + Docker] and [http://blog.docker.io/2013/09/powering-voxoz-ecosystem-with-docker/]
expand to automatically work under Xen the better.

* [http://voxoz.com/ Voxoz = ErlangOnXen + Docker] and [http://blog.docker.io/2013/09/powering-voxoz-ecosystem-with-docker/]

* [http://voxoz.com/ Voxoz = ErlangOnXen + Docker] and [http://blog.docker.io/2013/09/powering-voxoz-ecosystem-with-docker/]

* [http://voxoz.com/ Voxoz = ErlangOnXen + Docker] and [http://blog.docker.io/2013/09/powering-voxoz-ecosystem-with-docker/]
* [http://continuousdelivery.uglyduckling.nl/docker/run-docker-on-any-os-in-a-headless-hypervisor/ Run Docker on any OS in a headless hypervisor (probably not exactly the right use-case)]
* [https://github.com/boot2docker/boot2docker boot2docker]

|Outcomes=Is it feasible to do this? Would anyone be interested? Are there next steps?

This document contains information about limits of Xen 4.2.

== CPUs & Memory ==
* Xen can scale up to 4,095 host CPUs with 5Tb of RAM.
* Using Para Virtualization (PV), Xen supports a maximum of 512 VCPUs with 512Gb RAM per guest.
* Using Hardware Virtualization (HVM), Xen supports a maximum of 128 VCPUs with 512Gb RAM per guest.
{{TODO|Should this be 256 for HVM? }}

Note that in theory Xen supports 8192 VCPUs with PV, but event channel limitations (4k per guest) make it impossible for a guest this huge to boot, as each vCPU is expected to minimally require 2 of them (timer vIRQ and IPIs). The guest limits stated above are limits that have been tested. However, it is possibly to exceed these in theory.

== Other Limits ==
* Maximum of 32K interrupts and 2k PCI segments; this limits the number of devices that can be used in two ways:
** the number of devices that can be attached to the system must fit into 2k PCI segments (i.e. 2k * 256 [buses] * 32 [devices] * 8 [functions]),
** the number of hardware interrupts they may surface (one would expect at least one interrupt per device function, so this likely is the stricter of the two limitations).
