From Xen

Interwiki link

In light of the many pages you are moving to wiki.XenServer.org, would it be reasonable to establish an Interwiki link from wiki.XenProject.org to wiki.XenServer.org and vice versa?

Patrick, under other circumstances I would think this is a good idea. However, the XCP situation is more of a migration instead of a bridge. We want XCP to reside on XenServer.org and frankly, not be a part of our wiki at all (since it is an offshoot of XenServer and not part of the Xen Project itself). I'd eliminate the links altogether, if I did not suspect that some old links outside the wiki probably exist and need redirection. Simply telling these folks that the pages exist on another site (with appropriate link) is sufficient. If we want to formally link the wikis, that will take an act of the community.

Russell, Interwiki links are exactly for that use case. It is just a way to make the link syntax easier. For example, there are build in interwiki syntaxes for quite a few wikis, e.g. MediaWiki, Wikipedia, etc.

For example

[[wikipedia:Help]] and [[w:Help]] (shortcut)

render as wikipedia:Help and w:Help. So adding an interwiki link to xenserver: would make a lot of sense and woukd make it clear it goes somewhere else. I do agree though that it will only work if people use it.

  • Lars, does the existence of an Interwiki link require an administrator's privilege? That is, wikipedia:Help obviously needs a definition of what "wikipedia:" is. Can that definition be created by an ordinary wikipedian?
